US officials restrict Indian military from viewing F-35 cockpits

Indian Air Force Chief Marshal AP Singh publicly criticised United States officials for restricting access to F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters. Speaking at the conclusion of Exercise Tarang Shakti-2026 in Jodhpur, he revealed that US personnel barred Indian officials from approaching the jets. He shared the stage with General Kevin Schneider, Commander of US Pacific Air Forces, and questioned how Washington could discuss selling the aircraft without allowing physical inspections. US officials permitted Indian pilots to fly in close formation with the six visiting F-35 jets. However, they firmly refused to show the interior cockpit layout. General Schneider responded that strict programme-level security classification guides dictate exactly what information American forces can share. He noted that protecting highly sensitive military technologies remains standard protocol for all modern nations.

Exploring fifth-generation fighter alternatives

India urgently requires a fifth-generation fighter solution as China expands its own fleet of J-20 and J-35 stealth aircraft. Beijing expects to deliver forty J-35 fighters to Pakistan soon, directly altering the regional security balance. This geopolitical shift forces New Delhi to seek an interim stealth capability before its homegrown Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft becomes fully operational. Air Chief Marshal Singh confirmed Moscow has formally offered its Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets to New Delhi. Authorities have not yet made a final decision on the Russian proposal. Purchasing advanced fighter jets involves complex strategic commitments, including specialised weapons integration and long-term maintenance dependencies. These jets utilise special coatings and internal weapon bays to avoid radar detection, while advanced sensors feed pilots a single live picture of the battlespace.

European forces value joint operational training

European military leaders at the Jodhpur drills reported seamless integration with Indian forces. Lieutenant General Gunter Katz of the German Air Force and General Stephane Groen of the French Armed Forces stated their crews operated precisely as they would in Europe. Indian officials also briefed visiting subject matter experts on Operation Sindoor, a tactical military operation which neutralized multiple terror camps following a deadly attack in April last year. General Schneider highlighted the importance of discussing real-world combat operations to handle rapidly evolving global security challenges.
