The match began with lightning speed. Within just 28 seconds, veteran forward Mandeep Singh gave the Royals a 1-0 lead, pouncing on a rebound from close range. The Royals doubled their advantage in the ninth minute when captain Tom Boon converted a penalty corner opportunity, beating Dragons' goalkeeper David Harte.

However, the Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons refused to back down. The momentum shifted in the second quarter when Blake Govers fired a drag-flick into the net in the 24th minute, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.
