New Delhi, September 8: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will demolish a dilapidated building adjoining the site of the Satya Niketan PG building collapse that claimed seven lives.
The Chief Minister’s Office said the demolition has been ordered in the interest of public safety. Delhi Fire Service personnel are removing the belongings of students from the unsafe structure, while students and residents have been urged to cooperate with the authorities.
The move comes after the suspension of five civic officials responsible for monitoring illegal construction in the area near Delhi University’s South Campus.
Earlier in the day, Gupta visited AIIMS and met students injured in Sunday’s building collapse. She assured their families of government support and said the Delhi government would bear the full cost of treatment for all those injured.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police dismissed reports that mobile phone jammers had been installed at the rescue site. In a fact-check, the police said the claims were false and that mobile networks remained operational, allowing Delhi Police, NDRF and Fire Service teams to coordinate during the rescue operation.
The five-storey building, known as ‘Hostel Daze’, was being used as a boys’ PG when it collapsed around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, killing seven people. Parts of an adjacent building also reportedly collapsed, raising further concerns about the structural safety of buildings in the area.
Three members of the family associated with the PG have been arrested in connection with the incident.
