According to reports, the girl had previously been in a physical relationship with a man identified as Ajay Kumar and was pregnant. She was reportedly facing social stigma over her pregnancy.
Despite knowing that she was pregnant, three men allegedly forced her into a car and raped her repeatedly one after another. Reports suggest that the girl was experiencing labour pains at the time, but the accused allegedly continued to assault her. After allegedly raping her inside the car at night, the men abandoned her on an expressway and fled.
The girl subsequently gave birth without anyone by her side. Battling both the trauma of the alleged gang rape and the pain of childbirth, she wrapped her newborn in a piece of cloth and walked to a hospital in an attempt to save the baby's life.
However, by the time she reached the hospital, it was too late, and the newborn had died. The minor's condition remains critical.
Following a complaint lodged at the police station, police have begun an investigation and are examining CCTV footage to identify and trace the accused.
The incident has triggered public outrage, with demands for the strictest punishment for those responsible, including the death penalty.
