Paralakhemundi, Sept 23: A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is intensifying slowly and is likely to make landfall between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha by Wednesday evening. The weather system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several areas over the next three days.
The impact of the depression is already being felt in Odisha’s Gajapati district, where intermittent heavy rain has been reported. In Tiligaon under Cheligada gram panchayat of R. Udayagiri block, at least five houses have reportedly collapsed due to the incessant rain.
The affected families belong to Narasingh Sahu, Maheswar Beherdalai, Mahakal Sahu, Ramakrishna Mahankud and Gobinda Gauda. With their houses damaged, the families are currently forced to stay under the open sky. Residents have alleged that no officials had reached the area at the time of the report and have urged the administration to provide immediate assistance.
Meanwhile, a landslide has been reported near Paribeta under the R. Udayagiri police station area. Rocks reportedly fell from a hillside following continuous rainfall. Administrative officials and fire services personnel have reached the spot and are assessing the situation.
In another rain-related development, residents of Budhapanka village in Mohana block are facing severe waterlogging. The water level in the Ura stream near Budhapanka under Karchabadi gram panchayat has risen significantly due to continuous rainfall since Tuesday.
As the rising water has disrupted normal movement, villagers are effectively cut off. Locals have reportedly been forced to cross the swollen stream under risky conditions, raising concerns over their safety.
With heavy rainfall forecast to continue, residents in vulnerable areas have sought immediate intervention from the administration and necessary relief measures.
