Box office numbers for Ramayana point toward extraordinary festive success

Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated mythological epic, Ramayana, is rewriting box office history just two days into its theatrical run. Crossing the highly coveted Rs 200-crore barrier globally, the film has firmly established its dominance during this festive window. Worldwide, the production grossed Rs 221.05 crore by the end of Friday, positioning it for an expected sprint toward Rs 500 crore over the Diwali weekend. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, the movie drew immense crowds both domestically and abroad. Friday collections in India stood at Rs 48.05 crore nett. Much of this success originated in the Hindi-speaking states, contributing Rs 35.50 crore. Regional markets also chipped in solid numbers, with Kannada screens bringing in Rs 5.15 crore, Telugu Rs 4.75 crore, Tamil Rs 1.50 crore, and Malayalam Rs 1.15 crore. Diwali releases traditionally face initial hesitation before gaining momentum post-puja rituals, but this ambitious project defied those industry expectations to open remarkably strong. Co-produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, who also stars as Ravana, the movie grossed Rs 35 crore internationally on Friday alone. Over the first two days, foreign territories have contributed Rs 86.25 crore to the overall tally. Makers pitched the epic narrative as a factual representation of cultural history, striking a powerful chord with the global diaspora. Featuring Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and an expansive cast that includes Lara Dutta and Sunny Deol, the box office momentum shows no signs of fatigue. Trade experts now project the worldwide gross will comfortably cross the Rs 500-crore milestone by Sunday night as families flock to theaters.
