Bhubaneswar, Feb 14: Ahead of the upcoming Mahashivratri at the Lingaraj Temple, authorities have announced strict new guidelines prohibiting the use of plastic within the temple premises. Devotees have been instructed to use only leaf, wood, or paper-based materials for rituals and offerings. A designated enclosed area in the temple pond will be provided for the immersion of Naivedya (offering) items.

The move comes following directives from the State Pollution Control Board aimed at reducing pollution caused by plastic and promoting environmentally friendly practices. Polythene or plastic materials will not be permitted for carrying offerings, distributing prasad, or handling food items.

The directives are issued under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, and its subsequent amendments, which ban the use of single-use plastics. The Board emphasized that these measures are intended to safeguard the environment while ensuring that devotees, temple vendors, and the temple management committee follow sustainable practices.
