Kolkata, Aug 25: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched raids on Sunday at fifteen locations, including the residences of the ousted principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and former superintendent Sanjay Bashist, in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the beleaguered premier hospital.
The CBI initiated the search operation this morning, just a day after registering a First Information Report (FIR). On Friday, the Calcutta High Court had transferred the suspected financial corruption case to the federal agency, which is already investigating the alleged horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor on the hospital premises on August 9.
The raids targeted the residences and offices of former superintendent Sanjay Bashist, forensic department head Debashis Shome, supplier Biplab Singha, and other individuals under suspicion.
Sources revealed that Sandip Ghosh permitted the CBI to enter his Beliaghata residence after keeping them waiting for over an hour from 7 a.m.
Ghosh has already been interrogated by the CBI for more than 100 hours in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor.
Meanwhile, the strike by junior doctors at government hospitals reached its 17th day today. The protesters are demanding justice for their slain colleague and increased safety measures at their workplaces across the state. The most recent round of negotiations between West Bengal health officials and the medical staff failed to yield any results last night, according to sources.
