Barpali Railway Station Revamped with ₹22 Crore, Reflects Western Odisha's Cultural Heritage

Bhubaneswar, July 15: Barpali Railway Station in Odisha's Bargarh district has undergone a major transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, emerging as a modern, passenger-friendly railway hub while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of western Odisha.

Redeveloped at an estimated cost of  ₹22 crore, the station combines upgraded passenger amenities with architectural elements inspired by the region's unique traditions. The project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of developing world-class railway stations that preserve local identity while enhancing travel convenience.

The renovated station now features a modern station building with a new entrance portico, an expanded circulating area and improved access for passengers. A12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) with ramps has been constructed to ensure safe and barrier-free movement, particularly for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Passenger amenities have also been significantly upgraded, including wider approach roads, extended platform shelters, resurfaced platforms, modern waiting halls, improved toilets, enhanced lighting, and better passenger information and signage systems.

One of the standout features of the redevelopment is its tribute to the cultural heritage of western Odisha. The station's design draws inspiration from the globally acclaimed Barpali Ikat handloom tradition, while artistic motifs showcasing the vibrant Dalkhai folk dance and other regional art forms have been integrated into the station's interiors, giving it a distinct local character.

According to Indian Railways, the redevelopment reflects its commitment to creating railway stations that serve as modern transport hubs while showcasing the cultural and artistic identity of the regions they represent.

The upgraded station is expected to strengthen connectivity and support the growth of agriculture, trade, tourism, handloom and local industries, creating new opportunities for farmers, weavers, artisans, traders and entrepreneurs across western Odisha.

Barpali Railway Station is among 75 redeveloped railway stations that will be dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, 2026, marking another milestone in the nationwide implementation of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
