Sundargarh, July 28: In a dramatic turn of events, Promodini Majhi, a Panchayat Samiti Member who once led anti-liquor protests in Meghadega Panchayat under Tangarpali Block, has been arrested for allegedly running an illegal liquor business.
Majhi had garnered widespread support during her campaign against alcohol, which highlighted the growing unrest and financial instability in families caused by addiction. Riding on public sentiment, she was elected as a Panchayat Samiti Member with a significant vote margin.
However, the trust reposed in her by the people appears to have been betrayed. Post-election, allegations began surfacing that Majhi had shifted from opposing liquor to engaging in its illegal trade. Local residents filed multiple complaints regarding her alleged involvement in selling both country-made and foreign liquor.
Acting on these complaints, a team led by Excise Inspector Arati Mishra from Ujjualpur conducted a raid at Majhi’s residence. During the operation, authorities reportedly seized a substantial quantity of illicit liquor, estimated to be worth around ₹1 lakh.
Following the seizure, Majhi was taken into custody by the Excise Department. Her bail plea was subsequently rejected by the court, and she has since been remanded to judicial custody.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion in the region, with locals expressing disappointment over the reversal of stance by an elected representative who once championed a liquor-free society.
