Bhubaneswar, April 20: Akshaya Tritiya, observed on the third day of the bright fortnight in the month of Vaishakha, is being celebrated across Odisha with religious fervor and traditional rituals. Regarded as one of the most auspicious days of the year, the occasion is believed to bring eternal prosperity, with any new venture initiated on this day considered to yield lasting success.
In Puri, the festival marks the commencement of the annual Chandan Yatra of Lord Jagannath. The day also signals the beginning of preparations for the world-famous Rath Yatra, as construction of the three grand chariots formally begins. Following the ceremonial worship of tools, artisans initiate the chariot-building process in the Rathakhala.
Several religious and cultural observances are associated with the day. Married women perform traditional rituals like Shasthi Puja for family well-being, while special ceremonies are held at temples, including the symbolic wedding of Lord Balarama and Goddess Revati at Baladevjew Temple. The day also commemorates the birth anniversaries of Goddess Annapurna and poet Jayadeva.
Mythologically, Akshaya Tritiya holds deep significance. It is believed to mark the beginning of the Satya Yuga, while legends associate the day with the start of the Mahabharata’s composition by Sage Vedavyasa and Lord Ganesha. Folklore also recounts Lord Krishna’s meeting with Sudama on this day, symbolizing prosperity and the end of hardship.
For the farming community, the occasion is particularly important. Farmers begin agricultural activities through the ritual of ‘Akhi Muthi Anukula,’ symbolically sowing seeds and seeking blessings for a good harvest season ahead.
Astrologically, the day is considered a “self-auspicious muhurta,” meaning no specific timing is required to undertake auspicious activities. Devotees also engage in charity and religious acts, believed to bring enduring rewards.
With rituals, traditions, and cultural significance intertwined, Akshaya Tritiya continues to be observed as a day of faith, prosperity, and new beginnings across the state.
