Global overhaul leads to 50 percent staff reduction at Gurugram Adidas tech facility

Global shoe brand slashes 350 tech jobs in Gurugram

German sportswear brand Adidas is eliminating approximately 350 roles at its Gurugram Tech Hub. This significant workforce reduction impacts nearly half of the 700 employees currently stationed at the facility. Company leadership formally announced the impending job cuts during a company-wide town hall meeting on September 15.

Software engineers, data scientists, and data engineers form the bulk of the affected professionals at the specialised tech center. Management divided the departing employees into two distinct transition categories based on project needs. One group received immediate exit letters on Tuesday. Remaining impacted staff must stay until December 15 to properly hand over their ongoing projects to colleagues in other international regions. Workers who fail to secure internal company transfers by mid-December will officially leave the company on that specific date. Severance packages and detailed redeployment benefits have not been publicly disclosed.

Corporate realignment

Established just three years ago in 2021, the Gurugram center was originally designed to attract top Indian engineering talent to build consumer-facing digital products. Despite the current downsizing, Adidas maintains that India remains a strategically vital market for future operations. The brand recently expanded its regional footprint by opening a Global Business Services center in Chennai during 2024. These contrasting moves highlight a broader corporate shift toward optimising specialised global support centers.

Executives described the targeted workforce reduction as a "difficult decision" driven by rapidly evolving business requirements. Official statements cite the necessary need to simplify internal reporting structures, strengthen critical technical capabilities, and prepare the organization for long-term success in a shifting global market environment. Management promised to provide appropriate transition assistance with care and respect to all outgoing staff during this challenging period. The Gurugram office will continue to house local marketing teams alongside the remaining tech hub engineering workforce.
