Baripada, August 11: Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) has taken a significant step in enhancing wildlife conservation efforts by deploying AI-powered cameras.
These advanced cameras are aimed at tackling two major threats to the reserve's ecosystem: poaching and wildfires.
The AI cameras are equipped with sophisticated technology to monitor and analyze real-time footage of the reserve. They use artificial intelligence to detect suspicious activities and identify potential poachers. By analyzing patterns and behaviors, these cameras can alert authorities to illegal activities, allowing for quicker responses and more effective patrolling, said STR field director CCF Prakash Chand Gogineni sai.
Trial run of the cameras started in March last year. Currently, 50 such cameras are in place. In addition to combating poaching, the AI cameras are playing a crucial role in detecting and preventing wildfires. The technology can recognize signs of smoke and heat signatures, enabling early detection of fire outbreaks, he added.
This early warning system allows for prompt intervention, potentially preventing wildfires from spreading and causing extensive damage to the reserve's flora and fauna.
