Wayanad, July 29: At least 24 people have been reported dead and hundreds are feared trapped following a series of massive landslides in Kerala's Wayanad district early Tuesday morning. The landslides, occurring between 2 AM and 4 AM, severely impacted the hilly regions of Mundakai and Chooralmala.

The devastating landslides have caused extensive damage, and emergency responders are facing significant challenges in reaching the affected areas due to blocked roads and unstable terrain. Kerala Health Minister Veena George reported that four bodies have been transported to the Meppadi Community Health Centre (CHC), while over 50 injured individuals have been admitted to various hospitals.

"We have received five bodies so far, but there are hundreds of people trapped under the mud. Rescue operations are ongoing, and we are making every effort to save lives," said Minister George. She highlighted the particularly challenging situation in Mundakai, where the scale of the landslide has made it difficult for rescue teams to access the site.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has mobilised Fireforce and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to the affected areas. An additional NDRF team is also on its way to Wayanad to assist in the rescue and relief efforts.

The situation remains critical, and authorities are urging people to stay safe and follow official instructions as rescue operations continue in the affected regions.
