Cuttack, May 31: Kamala Maharana, fondly known as "Jari Mausi" of Kendrapara, passed away on Sunday evening while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack. She was 66.
Maharana had been admitted to the hospital in a critical condition after sustaining a fracture in her left thigh from a fall at her home on April 28. Despite medical efforts, her health deteriorated, and she breathed her last during treatment.
Known for her pioneering work in crafting household items from discarded polythene, Kamala Maharana emerged as a grassroots environmental champion. Her innovative efforts to reduce plastic waste brought her nationwide recognition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had lauded her work during his popular radio address Mann Ki Baat, highlighting her contribution to environmental sustainability. During a visit to Kendrapara, the Prime Minister paid a personal tribute by bowing and touching her feet — a rare gesture of respect.
In 2023, Maharana had sent a handmade jari rakhi to Prime Minister Modi on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. She later garnered attention again by sending handcrafted jari caps to the chiefs of India’s three armed forces following the successful completion of Operation Sindhur.
Kamala Maharana's passing marks the end of a life devoted to environmental awareness, traditional craftsmanship, and heartfelt patriotism. Her legacy continues to inspire across the nation.
