Bhubaneswar, May 29: In a significant move to address the housing needs of economically weaker sections and middle-class families, Odisha government on Thursday announced plans to offer affordable housing in Bhubaneswar with prices ranging from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra announced the initiative, adding that the state will implement Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for construction of these housing projects to ensure sustainable housing.
Mohapatra said that the government will build houses in four categories – Middle Income Group (MIG), Lower Income Group (LIG), LIG-1, and MIG-2 – under this scheme. Homes will be given through a lottery system.
He added that eligibility criteria will be set to make sure only eligible beneficiaries from the target income groups can apply.
According to the plans, these houses will be built on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, and similar projects will be started in Cuttack soon with the first phase focusing on city areas.
To handle the process smoothly, the government will partner with cooperative banks. These banks will monitor the housing units and collect EMIs from the beneficiaries.
In addition to promoting homeownership, the government is also planning to build rental housing in the city to reduce slum areas, which have been increasing due to the lack of affordable homes, the minister said.
