New Delhi, Aug 21: World Senior Citizen is celebrated on August 21 every year to mark the contribution of senior citizens to humankind. The day is dedicated to their dedication towards society and what they have provided throughout their lives for the nation’s development.
There are several reports showing most of the senior citizens nowadays being abused by their children for whom they sacrifice their whole life, savings and all. At old age, they were considered as burden and treated like unwanted part of the life.
History:
The day has its origin on August 19, 1988, when US President Ronald Reagan declared Senior Citizen's Day on August 21 throughout the country. He made sure that proper health care facilities by ensuring a safe environment for them and creating a life full of dignity and a sense of freedom.
The day plays a significant role as the older generation will reach a population of 1.5 billion or more by the end of 2050. The rise is also noticed in areas like East Asia and South East Asia.

Senior citizens bring wisdom from the past experiences of their lives which can help the younger generation to learn immensely. They also help in preserving culture and heritage by passing on the wisdom and facts over generations.
