Bhubaneswar, June 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that a cyclonic circulation over the northwestern Bay of Bengal is likely to bring widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next four days.

In view of this, the IMD has issued Orange and Yellow alerts for several districts and also warned that some areas may experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning.

The cyclonic circulation is expected to stay active until at least June 19, affecting weather across many parts of the state.

For June 16, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning, strong winds of 30–40 km/h, and heavy to very heavy rainfall in some places.

A Yellow Warning has also been issued for two groups of districts:

  1. Heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms are likely in Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nuapada, and Balangir.
  2. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) are expected in Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri.

Additionally, after a break of over two weeks, the southwest monsoon is expected to become active again this week. The cyclonic circulation is creating the right conditions for the monsoon winds to move further into Odisha.

Although the monsoon had reached southern Odisha in late May, it had stalled due to weak moisture.

Now, with this new system, districts in both interior and coastal Odisha will see increased rainfall in the coming days.
