2nd ODI: India clinches DLS win over New Zealand following brilliant bowling display

Gurnoor Brar delivers career-best bowling to seal narrow DLS victory

Gurnoor Brar claimed four vital wickets to help the Indian cricket team secure a thrilling four-run victory over New Zealand via the DLS method during a rain-interrupted second ODI at Henry Stadium in Wellington. Electing to bowl first under overcast skies on Saturday, India dismantled the hosts for 134 runs in 40.6 overs. In response, the visitors were struggling at 113 for 7 when persistent rain stopped play, but they remained four runs ahead of the DLS par score to claim the win. India now commands a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, continuing their dominant run on this tour.

Indian Bowlers Dominate Wellington Conditions

Brar recorded career-best figures of 4 for 30 in his 10 overs, aggressively slicing through the New Zealand middle order. Auqib Nabi struck early, dismissing openers Tim Seifert for a five-ball duck and Will Young for six runs. Anshul Kamboj and Axar Patel claimed two wickets each, maintaining relentless pressure. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh went wicketless but bowled tight lines to restrict run accumulation. Daryl Mitchell offered sole resistance for the home side, grinding out 55 runs off 104 deliveries, while Mitchell Santner added a brisk 31 off 38 balls. Their 59-run partnership provided brief stability before Brar removed Santner, and Kamboj eventually finished the innings by bowling Blair Tickner.

Top Order Stumbles During Chase

Chasing a modest target of 135, India faced intense hostility from Jacob Duffy and Kyle Jamieson, who picked up three wickets each for 35 runs. Skipper Shubman Gill fell for a golden duck in the second over. Virat Kohli managed seven before departing, while Rohit Sharma contributed a brisk 23 off 27 balls, including two sixes, before edging a delivery to slips. Axar Patel fell for seven, leaving the visitors reeling at 47 for 4. The batting unit then relied on Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to stabilize the innings. Iyer accumulated 30 runs from 46 deliveries, and Rahul remained unbeaten on 26 from 38 balls. Naman Dhir added 12 runs before falling to a deep catch. Despite late wickets, the crucial 39-run partnership between Iyer and Rahul ensured the team stayed just above the required DLS threshold when weather ended the contest.
