New Delhi, April 20: The Supreme Court will hear a PIL on Monday seeking a judicial probe into the violent protests in West Bengal, against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N.K. Singh is set to take up the case, which calls for a five-member inquiry commission headed by a retired SC judge. The PIL, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also urges the Centre to advise states to curb hate speeches by political leaders and demands a status report from the Bengal government on the violence.
The petition highlights unrest across multiple states, with violence, injuries, and internet bans in Murshidabad. It accuses politicians of exploiting religious sentiments.
Earlier, a bench led by CJI Sanjiv Khanna expressed concern over the ongoing violence. The Centre assured that no new appointments would be made to Waqf Boards under the amended Act until further notice.
