New Delhi, August 1: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the election to choose the next Vice President of India will take place on September 9, with the vote count scheduled for the same day.

Candidates can file their nominations until August 21, and the deadline for withdrawing candidature is August 25.

The Vice Presidential post became vacant following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Citing health concerns, Dhankhar stated in his resignation letter: “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”

On Thursday, the Election Commission confirmed that it has completed preparations and finalised the Electoral College list for the 2025 Vice Presidential Election.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Commission stated: “Accordingly, the Commission has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. These members are listed in a continuous serial order, arranged alphabetically based on the State/Union Territory of their respective Houses. The list will be available for purchase at a designated counter at the Election Commission of India following the official notification, expected soon.”

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament, using proportional representation with a single transferable vote. Voting is conducted by secret ballot.

If the vacancy arises due to reasons such as resignation, death, or removal, as in this case, the election must be held as soon as possible. The elected Vice President serves a full five-year term starting from the date of assuming office.
