In a significant loss to Indian politics, Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, the former Minister of External Affairs and Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away at the age of 92. Krishna, who played a pivotal role in shaping Karnataka's growth and India's foreign policy, died at his residence in Bengaluru after a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of an era for a leader who left an indelible mark on both state and national politics.

SM Krishna began his political journey in the 1960s. In 1962, he contested as an independent from the Maddur assembly seat and won, defeating the Congress candidate. He later joined the Praja Socialist Party and won the Mandya Lok Sabha seat in a by-election in 1968. Krishna returned to Congress in 1971 and won the same Lok Sabha seat again.

In 1985, Krishna returned to state politics and became Karnataka’s Chief Minister in 1999, serving until 2004. During his tenure, he was credited with transforming Bengaluru into the country’s technology hub, earning the city the title of "Silicon Valley of India." He also served as the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008 and as the Union Minister for External Affairs from 2009 to 2012, where he played a key role in shaping India’s foreign policy.

In 2017, Krishna made a significant shift in his political career by leaving Congress and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In recognition of his contributions to Indian politics, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2023. Krishna announced his retirement from active politics in January 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on X, describing Krishna as a "remarkable leader" admired by people from all walks of life. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighted Krishna's unparalleled service as a State and Union Minister and his contribution to the growth of the IT-BT sector. Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda and Karnataka's IT Minister Priyank Kharge also paid tribute, reflecting on Krishna's legacy of leadership and public service.

SM Krishna's passing marks the end of a distinguished political career that spanned several decades. His contributions to Karnataka's development and India's foreign policy have left a lasting legacy. As the nation mourns his loss, it also celebrates a life dedicated to public service and the betterment of society. Krishna's foresight, disciplined life, and gentlemanly demeanor serve as a role model for future generations of politicians. His impact on Indian politics and diplomacy will be remembered for years to come.
