Berhampur, June 16: A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition, fighting for her life at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, Odisha's Ganjam district, after allegedly attempting suicide by consuming sleeping pills. Her attempt came after she was reportedly raped by her alcoholic father.
Police arrested the father on Sunday, June 15, coinciding with Father's Day. He was subsequently sent to judicial custody by a court on Monday.
According to PK Patra, the inspector-in-charge of Digapahandi police, the alleged assault occurred on June 11. The girl was alone at home while her mother, who works as a domestic helper, was out for work. Her father, a daily wager, reportedly returned home intoxicated and then allegedly raped her.
Following the horrific incident, the girl consumed a large quantity of sleeping pills. She is currently undergoing treatment and remains in critical condition.
Upon regaining consciousness, the girl reportedly narrated the entire ordeal to her mother, who then filed a police complaint.
The accused, described as an alcoholic, has four children—two daughters and two sons. He has been charged under various sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.
