New Delhi, December 11: Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights. His petition, set for hearing on December 12 before Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, seeks to prevent unauthorized use of his name, image, and likeness.
Gavaskar is the first Indian cricketer to file such a lawsuit, expanding personality rights disputes beyond the entertainment industry.
The Delhi High Court has played a key role in shaping personality rights law, offering protections to public figures like Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
The court has recognized individuals' exclusive rights to control their persona's commercial use, particularly in the age of digital misuse. It has also addressed concerns around AI-generated impersonations, deepfakes, and digital merchandise. While upholding rights, the court ensures that spaces like satire, news reporting, and artistic expression remain unaffected.
In related news, the Delhi High Court recently issued directions to intermediaries in actor Salman Khan's case, reinforcing accountability for digital identity infringements.
