Bhubaneswar, August 22: For more than six decades, Pranab Patnaik’s voice was an inseparable part of Odisha’s musical journey. He did not simply shine in the world of music; he carved out a place of his own and ruled the hearts of generations of Odia listeners.
Today, that voice has fallen silent. A brilliant star has disappeared from Odisha’s musical sky, leaving behind an emptiness that words can hardly describe. His magical voice, his distinctive style and the emotional depth of his songs will continue to live in the hearts of Odias. His music, like the memories attached to it, will never grow old.
But behind the celebrated singer was a woman who quietly stood by him through every chapter of his life—his wife, Kasturika Patnaik.
The woman behind the voice
While Pranab remained immersed in music, recordings and cultural programmes, Kasturika took charge of the world he left behind at home.
She managed the family responsibilities, giving him the freedom to devote himself completely to his musical journey. Her support may not always have been visible on stage, but it became an important part of his success.
At home, too, music remained a shared experience. During rehearsals and practice sessions, Kasturika would quietly listen and encourage him. Those seemingly ordinary moments strengthened the bond between the couple.
Even in the final phase of Pranab’s life, Kasturika remained his biggest source of strength. She stood beside him and took care of his health, just as she had stood beside him throughout his long musical journey.
A private love story
Despite being one of Odisha’s most recognisable musical personalities, Pranab Patnaik largely kept his personal life away from public attention.
His relationship with Kasturika was marked by simplicity and companionship rather than publicity. While he dedicated himself to music, Kasturika remained actively involved in the family and in social service.
Their relationship was built not on the spotlight but on years of quiet understanding, support and togetherness.
Now, with Pranab gone, that long companionship has come to an end. The tears in Kasturika’s eyes tell the story of a loss far deeper than that of a legendary singer.
“He was a lover of my words”
Pranab’s warmth and affection also extended to those whose words gave life to his music.
His songs may have fallen silent, but the melody of his life—and the woman who stood beside him through it all—will remain part of Odisha’s musical memory.
