Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: Fresh details have emerged from the Crime Branch chargesheet in the sensational murder case of GRP constable Soumyaranjan Swain, shedding light on the victim's condition on the day of the incident and the sequence of events leading to the fatal assault.
According to the chargesheet, Soumyaranjan had allegedly consumed a significant quantity of drugs before the incident. The viscera analysis report reportedly detected the presence of substances associated with metabolism-enhancing agents, which are said to artificially boost the body's energy levels. Investigators believe this may have contributed to his agitated and abnormal behaviour during the assault, which allegedly provoked the attackers into becoming more violent.
During the course of the investigation, the Crime Branch's special team questioned Soumyaranjan's family members and friends multiple times to examine his personal life and possible motives behind the attack. Investigators also explored whether he had any prior relationship or enmity with the two women involved in the altercation at the scene or with the accused persons.
The chargesheet states that Soumyaranjan had been under mental stress for several months before his death due to personal reasons. It further claims that he had been suffering from emotional distress and had expressed a desire to travel away from home for a few days in an attempt to overcome his depression.
Investigators have also concluded that Soumyaranjan had no personal relationship with the woman who later filed the complaint in connection with the incident. According to the chargesheet, the confrontation began suddenly following a road accident on the day of the incident and escalated into violence.
The Crime Branch has further stated that the accused were not local residents, were unknown to the deceased, and had no prior enmity with him. Despite this, they allegedly acted as a group and assaulted Soumyaranjan. One of the accused is alleged to have attacked him with a bamboo pole belonging to a contractor, while another reportedly continued the assault despite being asked by his wife not to intervene.
The chargesheet includes several pieces of forensic and investigative evidence, including the drug analysis report, post-mortem report, medical examination report, and the polygraph (lie detector) test report of Soumyaranjan's friend, Om Prakash.
Crime Branch officials said some forensic reports are still awaited. These will be included in the final chargesheet, which is expected to be filed before the SDJM Court in Bhubaneswar shortly.
The investigation into the high-profile murder case remains ongoing, and the findings contained in the chargesheet will be subject to judicial scrutiny during the trial.
