Bhubaneswar, Aug 31: ‘Gamha Purnima’ or Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in Shree Jagannath Temple here amid religious fervour and serenity on Thursday.
The ‘Purnima’ in the lunar month of ‘Sravana’ is called ‘Jhulana Purnima’ or ‘Gamha Purnima’ which marks the birthday of Lord Balabhadra.
Devi Subhadra tied Rakhis and Guamala to the hands of her brothers Lord Balabhadra and Lord Jagannath.
As per rituals, Gahmamanda is offered to deities in the Shreemandir on the occasion.
Pata Rakhi, made from Basunga Pata and ornamented with gold, and Guamala, made with 54 betel nuts and prepared by Patara Sevaks are tied to the hands of Lord Balabhadra and Lord Jagannath. The Guamala is chained with beads of four colours- red, green, purple and yellow colours.
The yellow and red colour Rakhi is for Lord Jagannath while the purple-blue colour combination is for Lord Balabhadra.
