Puri, August 7: A sudden power outage on Wednesday at around 5:20 PM plunged the casualty ward of Puri District Headquarters Hospital into darkness, exposing glaring gaps in the hospital’s infrastructure. With no alternative lighting or backup power supply such as inverters or generators in place, patients and their attendants were forced to use mobile phone flashlights to provide light while doctors continued examining patients and writing prescriptions.
The blackout lasted for approximately five minutes, during which patient care was severely disrupted. Similar conditions were reported in other wards of the hospital, raising serious concerns about emergency preparedness at the facility.
Patients and their families expressed dissatisfaction and frustration over the hospital’s inability to ensure uninterrupted power supply, which is critical for effective medical treatment. The lack of basic backup systems has surprised many, highlighting urgent need for hospital authorities to address these shortcomings to prevent further impact on patient care during power failures.
