Amazon has initiated another round of workforce reductions, with employees in India among those affected. The latest cuts reportedly involve fewer than 1,000 corporate positions globally and are concentrated largely within the company's Stores division, which oversees its core online retail operations.
Employees in India, the United States and the United Kingdom are understood to have been impacted. Teams associated with customer service, seller support and marketplace operations are among those facing changes, while some retail-focused engineering positions have also reportedly been affected.
Amazon has confirmed the workforce reduction, characterising it as a relatively small adjustment to its organisational structure. The company said changes within its Stores business are intended to better align teams with its current priorities and improve how it serves customers.
Another Round of Restructuring
The latest layoffs follow a much larger workforce reduction announced by Amazon over the previous year. The company had eliminated roughly 30,000 corporate positions through late 2025 and early 2026 as part of an effort to reduce costs and simplify its organisational structure.
The new reductions indicate that Amazon's restructuring exercise is continuing, even though the latest round is considerably smaller. The company is simultaneously directing significant resources toward artificial intelligence, including investments in data centres, specialised chips and other infrastructure.
India Remains an Important Market
The job cuts come at a notable time for Amazon's Indian operations, as the company continues to expand its presence in the country.
Amazon recently opened a large new campus in Bengaluru and continues to invest in its e-commerce, payments, technology and seller-services businesses. This suggests that the latest layoffs are more closely connected to changes in workforce requirements and organisational priorities than to a broad withdrawal from the Indian market.
Amazon has also expanded its operational network ahead of the festive shopping season. The company says it has created more than 160,000 seasonal employment opportunities across its India operations for the 2026 festive period.
Job Cuts Coincide With Major Shopping Event
The timing of the layoffs has attracted attention because they coincide with Amazon's major festive shopping campaign in India. The 2026 Great Indian Festival opened to all customers on October 8, with discounts across electronics, smartphones, fashion, home products and other categories.
