NIA to investigate mid-air knife attack on Captain Smit Machchhar

Central Government orders NIA investigation into the mid-air stabbing.

Central Government authorities have formally directed the National Investigation Agency to examine the cockpit incident aboard FlyDubai Flight 1073. Officials suspect a broader conspiracy after an Omani first officer allegedly stabbed Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar on September 30. Flight 1073 originally departed Dubai at 7:05 am Gulf Standard Time, carrying 174 passengers alongside six crew members. While flying near the Jordan-Saudi Arabia border, the aircraft abruptly dived and reversed course into Saudi airspace. Passengers reported witnessing the co-pilot attacking Captain Machchhar, interpreting the sudden violence as a calculated effort to hijack or intentionally crash the commercial plane. Alert crew members and brave passengers swiftly intervened, overpowering and restraining the attacker to prevent a catastrophic outcome.

Captain Machchhar suffered severe head and hand lacerations during the intense struggle. Backup pilots who happened to be on board immediately secured the cockpit controls. They safely navigated the distressed aircraft to an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia, at approximately 10:45 am. Saudi security forces arrested the first officer upon arrival on the tarmac. This unprecedented mid-air violence raises severe global aviation security concerns, prompting swift jurisdictional intervention from Indian authorities. Officials noted the incident holds grave national and international implications. Consequently, charges were filed under Section 3 of the Anti-Hijacking Act of 2016, alongside stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act of 1967.

NIA will now focus entirely on the exact sequence of events inside the sealed flight deck. Investigators plan to determine the attacker's core motive and verify if this stabbing represents a larger organised terror threat. Currently, official government orders do not detail the co-pilot's background or the specific triggers for the violent outburst. The anti-terror agency aims to deliver a thorough security report on this startling breach of commercial flight safety.
