A Landmark Visit After 57 Years
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday for a historic two-day bilateral visit to Argentina, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The landmark trip, the third stop on his current five-nation tour, signals a renewed focus on strengthening ties with the key Latin American nation. Upon his arrival at Ezeiza International Airport, the Prime Minister was given a full ceremonial welcome.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated he was "eager to be meeting President Javier Milei and holding detailed talks with him." While he had previously visited Argentina in 2018 for the G20 Summit, this visit is dedicated solely to reinforcing the bilateral relationship.
Deepening a Strategic Partnership
The core agenda of the visit is to advance the multifaceted strategic partnership between India and Argentina. The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold wide-ranging discussions with President Milei, whom he met last year. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, these talks will focus on boosting cooperation in several key areas, including defense, agriculture, critical minerals, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade, and investment.
In his departure statement from New Delhi, PM Modi described Argentina as a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator within the G20. The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to the relationship, building on a foundation of shared interests and mutual benefit. After concluding his engagements in Argentina, the Prime Minister will travel to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit.
