New Delhi, Aug 18: Amid the ongoing issue between Congress and the Election Commission of India (ECI) over 'vote theft' allegations, opposition parties are likely to move an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain also commented on the issue, saying the party is ready to use all democratic methods, including an impeachment motion if necessary. However, he added that no formal discussions have taken place yet.
The day before, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar denied all the "vote theft" allegations made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi against the Election Commission of India (ECI) during a press conference in Delhi.
He called the allegations of bias by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha an "insult" to the Constitution of India. The CEC also asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to either provide a signed affidavit or apologize to the nation for his comments.
"An affidavit must be provided, or an apology should be made to the country. There is no third option. If the affidavit is not submitted within seven days, it will mean that all these allegations are baseless," CEC Gyanesh Kumar said while speaking to the media.
On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi responded to CEC Gyanesh Kumar, claiming that the Election Commission is asking for an affidavit from him but not from BJP MP Anurag Thakur, even though he makes the same allegations.
"The Election Commission asks for an affidavit from me, but when Anurag Thakur makes the same claims, it doesn't ask him for one," Rahul Gandhi said.
Meanwhile, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju today urged Congress and other opposition parties to avoid causing disruptions in Parliament over the issue and emphasized that it should be addressed through proper channels.
