Tragedy struck New Delhi on June 23, 1980, when a fatal aircraft accident claimed the life of thirty-three-year-old Sanjay Gandhi. He lost control of a new Pitts SA2 stunt plane while attempting low-altitude maneuvers. His aircraft plunged into the Diplomatic Enclave near Safdarjung Airport, killing both him and Captain Subhash Saxena, his co-pilot.

Prior to his death, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi relied heavily on her younger son as her primary strategist and chosen successor.
