Judicial cooperation strengthens as India and Russia sign agreement

India and Russia have officially strengthened their legal ties after their highest courts signed a landmark pact in Moscow to boost bilateral judicial cooperation. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant met with his Russian counterpart Igor Krasnov to ink the memorandum of understanding. The agreement establishes a formal framework for both legal systems to share institutional knowledge, conduct joint training programs, and collaborate on judicial research.

Bridging Different Legal Traditions

Addressing the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, Chief Justice Surya Kant pointed out that both nations share a core duty to maintain public faith in legal systems. This partnership comes at a time when global judiciaries are navigating rapid social changes and digital growth. For Odisha and other Indian states, these central level global pacts often help standardise local high court digital frameworks, improving overall case disposal rates.

Human Oversight in Automated Courts

Digital upgrades must make legal systems transparent rather than replacing human judges. India has actively used artificial intelligence to help everyday citizens navigate complex courtroom battles. Tools like the SUVAS program now translate English verdicts into 16 regional languages, while the new "Su Sahay" chatbot helps regular people track legal files easily.

Core Legal Stance: AI can handle courtroom paperwork, translate documents, and manage files, but it will never have the power to weigh evidence or decide a case.

Both nations plan to use this pact to share best practices through their respective judicial academies, ensuring that modern technology always respects human values.
