Mahaprabhu Jagannath movie release date: Animated film to hit theatres on August 28

Bhubaneswar, August 18: Odisha’s much-awaited animated feature film ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ is set to arrive in theatres on August 28, following a legal battle that delayed its originally planned release.

The film, which was initially scheduled for a July release, is being positioned as a major pan-India animated cinematic venture centred on the sacred lore of Lord Jagannath. It is being presented as a family-oriented story designed to introduce younger audiences to devotion, culture and traditional values. The film is planned for release in Hindi, Odia and Telugu across more than 300 screens in association with Cinepolis.

Why Was the Release Delayed?

The film’s original July release was interrupted after the Orissa High Court temporarily restrained its release following a PIL that raised objections over the portrayal of Lord Jagannath and sought judicial scrutiny of the film’s content.

The makers challenged the order before the Supreme Court. On July 17, the apex court allowed the film to be released after the Rath Yatra rituals concluded, effectively permitting exhibition from July 28 onward.

The legal controversy continued, but on July 29, the Supreme Court refused to stop the release, while expressing concern over attempts to restrict artistic works on grounds of sensitivity.

With the legal hurdles cleared, the distributors have now opted for a fresh August 28 nationwide release strategy.

What Is the Film About?

‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ blends animation, spirituality and Indian cultural storytelling, with the makers specifically aiming to make the story accessible to children and families.

The film is based around the divine world associated with Lord Jagannath and is being promoted as a cinematic experience that combines devotion with a fictional narrative and messages for younger viewers. The official film website describes it as a feature designed to explore sacred lore while conveying cultural lessons and values.

The project also follows the earlier animated television series ‘Jay Jagannath’, which helped establish the characters and universe for audiences before the theatrical film.

A Major Milestone for Odisha’s Animation Industry

The film comes from Bhubaneswar-based Ele Animations and is being presented as a major step for Odisha’s animation sector. It has also been described as the first major theatrical animated feature centred on Lord Jagannath and as the beginning of the studio’s planned ‘Sanatan Universe’.

The project is led by Durga Prasad Dalai, founder of Ele Animations, with Shripad Warkhedkar directing. The story and screenplay are by Pallavi Sharma, while the music and technical team includes Arjit Shrivastava, Aviral Kumar and lyricist Atul Kumar Verma.

Makers Welcome Supreme Court Decision

Producer Durga Prasad Dalai has expressed gratitude for the Supreme Court’s intervention and said the film was created with devotion and respect for Odisha’s cultural heritage.

The makers have maintained that their objective is to take the story and devotional significance associated with Lord Jagannath to children and families through animation and cinema.

What Makes August 28 Significant?

For audiences who had been waiting for the film since its original July schedule, August 28 now becomes the new date to watch out for.

The nationwide release is expected to give the film a much larger audience across linguistic regions, particularly as it combines Odisha’s Jagannath tradition with a pan-Indian animated format.

With the legal dispute now cleared and Cinepolis backing the theatrical rollout, the question that remains is: Can ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ turn Odisha’s beloved spiritual tradition into a successful pan-India animation experience?
