Pakistan top court orders hospital transfer for Imran Khan.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court has directed authorities to shift former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours to receive specialized medical attention. The judicial bench ruled that the 73-year-old leader will stay at the private medical facility until September 16, granting weekly visitation rights to his family members. Judges instructed the government to establish a dedicated medical board to supervise Khan’s recovery. This panel will include Dr. Uzma Khan, his sister, alongside his personal physician. The bench also prohibited legal representatives and family members from sharing confidential health reports with media outlets or using the medical situation for political leverage.
Legal representatives had previously warned that Khan suffered significant vision loss in his right eye during his confinement. Former President Arif Alvi reviewed recent clinical evaluations, warning of elevated blood pressure, cardiac palpitations, and extreme stress levels. International sports figures and cricket legends from multiple nations had also urged authorities earlier this year to improve his detention environment.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf officials welcomed the judicial ruling, expressing relief that specialised doctors will now oversee his care. Khan has remained behind bars since August 2023 following convictions in several cases after his 2022 parliamentary removal.
Khan led Pakistan from 2018 until his removal through a no-confidence vote, maintaining strong public backing despite several legal challenges and the loss of his party's official electoral symbol. The latest court intervention offers critical relief during an intense period of domestic political tension and institutional friction across Pakistan.
