Bhubaneswar, Aug 16: Workers getting injured or losing their lives at mining sites or stone quarries due to blasting, is certainly disturbing and unwarranted. But if such incidents occur due to illegal blasting, then that is bound to invite severe criticism and public demand for those responsible for such mishaps.

In recent years, quite a few such incidents have been reported in Odisha. On Wednesday, there was another addition to that list with an illegal blasting in Balasore district. The mishap in a stone quarry in Bagudi locality under Soro Block claimed life of a worker, while five others sustained serious injuries, reports said.

As per sources, piling of debris during the blast killed one worker, while five others sustained critical injuries. The injured were first rushed to nearby Soro Hospital and then later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for better treatment, revealed sources.

Despite Section 144 being imposed at several quarries in the locality by district administration, illegal blasting are being carried out regularly violating the orders. The Wednesday unfortunate incident was fallout of yet another such illegal act, sources added.

Meanwhile, local police and Tehsildar have inspected the spot and were probing into more details, sources added.
