Bhubaneswar, August 17: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Monday visited flood affected areas in Jajpur district.
Wearing life jackets, the Chief Minister travelled by boat through inundated areas and inspected the flood situation from close quarters and assessed the impact of rising river water on affected areas.
Rajya Sabha MP and BJP State unit president Manmohan Samal, Jajpur MP Rabindra Narayan Behera also accompanied the Chief Minister. The team visited the affected areas.
With the Baitarani river in spate, several low-lying areas of Jaipur have come under floodwater, raising concerns over further inundation. The visit comes amid ongoing relief and response measures in the affected areas.
Several coastal and northern districts like Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur are reeling under severe flood situation due to the heavy downpours triggered by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. Major urban hubs like Raurkela and Bhubaneswar are also struggling with severe waterlogging and localised flooding.
On Sunday, the State Government issued a high alert for some north Odisha districts as the flood situation worsened with rivers Baitarani, Brahmani and some tributaries witnessing a rising trend again following widespread rainfall in the wake of the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal yesterday.
A red warning has been issued for extremely heavy rainfall in three districts - Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj - till Monday by India Meteorological Department. This apart, orange and yellow warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall have been issued for 11 and six districts respectively, including Bhadrak and Jajpur, till Tuesday.
