Reliance partners with Rolls-Royce to manufacture AMCA jet engines

India took a decisive step toward self-reliance in military aviation as Reliance Industries partnered with global engineering firm Rolls-Royce to create an indigenous engine for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Both corporate groups announced their strategic intent to develop and deliver sovereign combat powerplants for the nation's upcoming fifth-generation stealth fighter fleet.

Strategic Alliance

Under the proposed agreement, Rolls-Royce will contribute its deep aerospace engineering background, while Reliance Industries provides modern manufacturing scale, technology infrastructure, and execution capabilities. The collaboration intends to create an end-to-end domestic supply chain that covers engine blueprinting, prototype building, rigorous testing, full-scale production, and lifecycle maintenance. This arrangement ensures that India retains long-term control over critical propulsion systems rather than relying strictly on licensed overseas assembly.

Executive Director of Reliance Industries Anant Ambani highlighted the necessity of domestic innovation for national security. "India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capability in critical technologies," Ambani stated. He added that the joint initiative aims to build an enduring national capacity that helps India achieve self-reliance and gain global competitiveness in advanced propulsion systems.

Historically, developing indigenous jet propulsion has remained one of India's most demanding defence hurdles, requiring extreme metallurgical precision and decades of research. Establishing a sovereign production line reduces vulnerability to global supply bottlenecks while providing dedicated power for next-generation combat airframes.

Dedicated Propulsion Complex Planned

Both firms also plan to establish an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex on Indian soil. This specialised facility will focus on research, power generation, and industrial output across the entire propulsion lifecycle. Beyond the AMCA fighter programme, the hub may explore broader defence and civil aviation opportunities, including novel power systems.

Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Tufan Erginbilgi welcomed the strategic collaboration. "I welcome the opportunity to join forces with Reliance Industries, bringing together our century-long heritage in advanced engineering and proven engine expertise with their homegrown leadership in Indian industry," Erginbilgi said. He noted that the initiative marks a critical milestone toward building a robust Indian aerospace sector aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat roadmap.
