Odisha: 6,649 candidates in fray for Students’ Union Election, polling on Oct 15

With the final list out, the ‘Why I Stand For’ meetings will be organised at the higher educational institutions on October 14.

Odisha: 6,362 candidates in fray for Students’ Union Election, polling on Oct 15

Bhubaneswar, October 10: As many as 6,649 candidates are now in the fray for the Students’ Union elections, scheduled for October 15, in 360 public universities, colleges and aided colleges across the State.

As per the election schedule, the final list of candidates contesting different positions in the Students’ Union elections was published by the respective higher educational institutions at 3 PM today.

According to information available as of 8.30 PM on Saturday, a total of 347 colleges and 13 public universties will conduct elections to elect their student leaders.

Out of the total 8,370 nomination papers filed in colleges, 1196 candidatures were rejected on different grounds. Of the 7,174 valid candidates, 405 students withdrew their nomination papers leaving 6,362 students in the fray for the elections to the Students’ Union, which was absent in the campus for eight years since 2018.

Similarly, as many as 429 students have filed nomination papers across 13 public universities in the State. While nomination papers of 49 candidates were rejected, there were a total of 380 valid candidates. Later, 34 candidates withdrew their candidatuers leaving 287 students in the fray for the election in the university level.

As per the notification, with the final list out, the ‘Why I Stand For’ meetings will be organised at the higher educational institutions on October 14.

Polling will be held on October 15 from 8 AM to 2 PM. Vote counting will take place on the same day after polling, followed by the declaration of results. The newly elected student leaders will take the oath of office on October 16.

The elections will be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee. The State Government and police administration have made elaborate security arrangements for the smooth conduct of the elections.
