According to the organizers, the programme will commence at 2:30 pm local tim and continue till late evening. The event will showcase Odisha’s vibrant culture and traditions through a series of cultural performances and activities.
The celebrations will feature traditional Odia dance and music performances, painting competitions and an exhibition of authentic Odia cuisine. The aroma of traditional pithas and other delicacies is expected to add a distinct flavour to the festival. Members of the Odia community from different parts of South Africa are expected to participate in large numbers.
The association has appealed to all Odias residing across South Africa to join the event and make the celebration a grand success.
Raja is one of Odisha’s most significant agrarian festivals, observed annually from June 14 to 16. The three-day festival comprises ‘Pahili Raja’, ‘Mithuna Sankranti’ and ‘Sesa Raja’, followed by ‘Basumati Snana’ on the fourth day.
The festival symbolises the fertility of Mother Earth and the onset of the monsoon season. Farmers traditionally suspend agricultural activities during the period and offer prayers to Basumati, the Earth Goddess. Raja celebrations are marked by traditional delicacies, swings, folk games and social gatherings, reflecting Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and community spirit.
