Russian aerospace firms prepare landmark commercial airplane agreements locally
Russian aviation companies are preparing to finalize commercial agreements with domestic carriers involving up to 105 regional passenger aircraft. United Aircraft Corporation plans to announce these strategic partnerships during the Innoprom India exhibition currently underway in New Delhi. Historically, Moscow has dominated New Delhi's military imports, making this commercial push a notable shift toward deepening civil aviation and civilian industrial ties.
Expanding Regional Fleets
Negotiations between Russian executives and domestic partners have advanced steadily over the past six months. UAC Chief Executive Officer Vadim Badekha noted that delegates expect to formalize multiple binding agreements before the exhibition concludes. Commercial focus remains heavily centered on the IL-114-300 regional airliner, a model optimized for efficient short-haul operations.
Proposed contracts outline large aircraft deliveries for several growing regional airlines. Pinnacle Air intends to acquire 50 IL-114-300 units to significantly expand its local route network. Air Kerala is negotiating for up to 20 planes, while Sleek Aviation holds an active memorandum of understanding covering an additional 35 aircraft. These discussions naturally build upon a preliminary arrangement signed in January with Flamingo Aerospace for six identical planes during the Wings India event in Hyderabad.
Local Manufacturing Goals
Beyond direct commercial sales, Moscow seeks to establish India as a primary manufacturing base for its broader aerospace sector. Discussions regarding the localized assembly of the SJ-100 regional jet are reportedly 80 percent complete. Industry executives anticipate signing a final production pact soon, directly following an earlier understanding between UAC and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to enable joint licensed manufacturing.
By securing these civil aviation projects ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit, both nations seek to solidify their enduring industrial partnership. Relocating commercial aerospace production directly to Indian soil supports regional connectivity goals while injecting valuable capital into domestic manufacturing lines.
