Bhubaneswar, June 5: In the auspicious month of Jyeshtha, one of the significant occasions celebrated is Vat Savitri Vrat, also known as Savitri Amavasya or Vat Purnima, which falls on Sunday, June 6 this year. This observance holds deep meaning for married women, who fast for the longevity of their husbands and the prosperity of their families. Central to the ritual is the worship of the Banyan tree on the Amavasya, or New Moon day of the Jyeshtha month.
Significance of the Banyan tree:
The significance of the Banyan tree in Hindu scriptures cannot be overstated. It is believed that the trinity of Lords Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh resides within its sacred branches. The root symbolizes Lord Brahma, the trunk represents Lord Vishnu, and the upper part signifies Lord Shiva. Worshipping this divine tree on Vat Savitri Vrat is believed to fulfill the devotees' wishes. According to mythology, Savitri's unwavering devotion brought her husband, Satyavan, back from the clutches of Yamraj, the God of Death. Today, women across the country fast on this day, seeking blessings for a harmonious married life.
The Vat Savitri Puja is performed with great reverence. Early in the morning, married women attire themselves as brides and adorn their foreheads with vermillion. Rice and flowers are offered to the Banyan tree, followed by tying a yellow or red thread around its trunk while applying vermillion. Circumambulating the tree, prayers are offered for the well-being of their spouses and families. Many also worship Goddess Savitri on this day, concluding the rituals by breaking their fast and offering food to the Banyan tree.
Various materials are required for the Puja, including idols or images of Goddess Savitri and Satyavan, the Vrat's story, and the Raksha Sutra book. Additionally, devotees prepare raw cotton, banyan fruit, bamboo fans, kumkum, fruits, flowers, Roli, sandalwood, akshat, lamps, scents, perfumes, incense, wedding paraphernalia, batasha, betel nut, puri, jaggery, gram, peanuts, homemade prasad, makhana, coconut, and sweets. Each item holds symbolic significance in the ritual, adding to the sanctity of the occasion.
Vat Savitri Vrat stands as a testament to devotion and the enduring traditions that enrich Hindu culture, fostering familial harmony and spiritual growth.
