Naveen Patnaik questions Odisha Govt’s Stand on Mahanadi water dispute

Bhubaneswar, July 24:  Leader of Opposition and former CM Naveen Patnaik has questioned the Odisha government’s commitment to the ongoing legal battle over the Mahanadi water dispute with Chhattisgarh.

Reacting to a high-level review meeting chaired by CM Mohan Charan Majhi, Patnaik asked whether the state was planning to withdraw its case before the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, whose next hearing is on August 2.

He raised concerns over a possible “mutual agreement” with Chhattisgarh, alleging a lack of transparency. Calling Mahanadi "the soul of Odisha," Patnaik urged for stakeholder consultation and demanded an all-party meeting to clarify the government’s stand. He warned that any secret settlement could endanger Odisha’s water rights.

Patnaik demands that the state government convene an all-party meeting to explain the kind of compromise being considered or already decided with the BJP government in Chhattisgarh
