Bhubaneswar, May 6: Former Odisha Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition, Naveen Patnaik, departed for New Delhi this afternoon to participate in a special Victory Day celebration at the Russian Embassy, where his father, the iconic statesman Biju Patnaik, will be honoured for his daring role in World War II.
The commemorative event, set for May 7, is part of a two-day programme marking the 80th anniversary of Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany. Biju Patnaik’s brave missions in support of the Soviet Red Army, particularly during the decisive Battle of Stalingrad, earned him international recognition. As a pilot, he flew high-risk sorties delivering critical arms and supplies to Soviet forces.
In a tribute to his wartime heroics, the Russian Embassy will unveil a memorial plaque in his honour. The invitation to attend the ceremony was extended to Naveen Patnaik by Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov.
The broader Victory Day celebrations on May 9 will include cultural programmes and diplomatic tributes to the global heroes of WWII. Biju Patnaik remains one of the few Indian figures celebrated internationally for his direct contributions to the war effort.
