Bhubaneswar, Sept 27: Five rare orangutan cubs rescued from Balasore are gradually recovering and remain under medical observation at the quarantine facility of Nandankanan Zoological Park.
The cubs have undergone health examinations and blood tests. PCCF Prem Kumar Jha said DNA testing may be conducted later, if required. He also said that an investigation into the alleged transportation of the orangutans is currently underway.
The five cubs were rescued from Balasore on the 8th and subsequently brought to Nandankanan. During blood tests conducted on the 17th, the cubs were found to be suffering from anaemia. They were administered the necessary injections to help improve their blood levels.
A technical committee constituted by the PCCF is closely monitoring their health and advising on their treatment. The cubs are being fed at scheduled intervals under veterinary supervision. The quantity of milk powder in their diet has been increased, while carrots and boiled beans are also being provided. Swings have been arranged to allow the cubs to play and remain active.
The cubs have now completed 20 days in quarantine. Officials said they are eating well, playing and gradually becoming more active. As per protocol, they will remain in quarantine for another 10 days.
However, a final decision has not yet been taken on where the cubs will be housed within Nandankanan after completing their quarantine period.
