Puri, Oct 26: Thousands of migratory birds have arrived in the Kanas area of Puri district, adjacent to Chilika Lake, ahead of the winter season. However, the arrival of these winged visitors has raised concerns among local nature lovers, who allege that bird poaching and illegal trafficking are increasing in the area.
Every year, migratory birds travel thousands of miles to reach the water bodies and wetlands of Kanas, located on the opposite side of Chilika Lake. Their arrival brings life to the region, with bird calls filling the surrounding wetlands.
However, according to local allegations, some poachers are exploiting the seasonal arrival of the birds. They reportedly use poisonous substances and nets to hunt the migratory species illegally.
Environmental enthusiasts have expressed concern over the alleged lack of effective action by the Forest Department. They have also raised questions about the department’s patrolling arrangements, claiming that inadequate surveillance has allowed poachers to continue their activities.
Local residents and nature lovers have urged the authorities to strengthen patrols, protect the migratory birds and take strict legal action against those involved in illegal hunting and trafficking.
The seasonal arrival of migratory birds is an important ecological feature of the Chilika region. Conservationists say effective monitoring and timely intervention are essential to protect these visiting species and preserve the area's wetland ecosystem.
