Keonjhar, May 3: The Keonjhar Fast Track Court has issued a verdict sentencing Bijay Nayak of Ankalpada village under Pandapada police jurisdiction to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for his attempt to rape a minor girl back in 2017.
Presiding Judge Bijay Kumar Mishra imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on the accused. Failure to pay the stipulated fine will result in an additional one-year imprisonment, as stated in the judgment order. Additionally, the court has mandated Bijay Nayak to compensate the victim with Rs 1 lakh.
The incident took place while the victim's parents had gone to watch opera, leaving their two daughters at home. Taking advantage of their absence, Bijay Nayak forcefully entered into their house and attempted to assault the victim. Her younger sister, awakened by her screams, intervened and alerted their parents. Villagers intervened and apprehended Bijay Nayak as he attempted to flee.
The case was brought to light following a formal complaint lodged by the victim's parents, leading to the involvement of the Pandapada police. Subsequently, Bijay Nayak was presented before the court. The judgment was pronounced after the court heard testimonies from nine witnesses.
