Bhubaneswar, August 20: The BJP Central Election Committee on Tuesday announced Mamata Mohanta as party candidate for the for the Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha.
August 21 is the last date for filing nomination and voting for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha is scheduled to be held on September 3.
Names of state BJP president Manmohan Samal and Mamata Mohanta were doing rounds for the seat in media for the last one week.
Speaking to a regional television channel BJP Odisha in-charge Vijaypal Singh Tomar on Saturday had said, “Mamata Mohanta will be fielded for the seat from Odisha lying vacant after her resignation as a member of the upper house. Bjp central leadership will announce her candidature in a day or two”.
Mamata Mohanta joined BJP at the party headquarters New New Delhi on July 31 a day after she resigned from Rajya Sabha and BJD.
After joining BJP, Mohanta said, “I have joined BJP being inspired by the developmental works and vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.
