Puri, Aug 19: Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra were adorned with sacred rakhis on Gamha Purnima, also known as Rakhi Purnima, at the Srimandir in Puri. The gold-laden Pata Rakhis and guaramalas, which are a significant part of the ritual, were meticulously crafted at the home of the Patara Bisoyi servitor.
The preparation of these sacred rakhis began on the last no-moon day, with the Srimandir administration providing Basunga pata thread and other necessary materials. The threads, in hues of red, blue, violet, and yellow, were softened and used to create the rakhis.
A total of four rakhis were crafted for the two deities. Additionally, a special garland known as a guaramala was prepared using 54 gua (betel nuts). The guaramala was made in two distinct colour combinations: yellow and red for Lord Jagannath, and blue and violet for Lord Balabhadra.
On the morning of Gamha Purnima, the Patara servitors, upon receiving a summon from the temple, brought the rakhis and guaramalas to the Srimandir. Following the Bhoga Mandapa rituals, the mailam ritual was performed. The Pushpalaka servitor then offered the Pata Rakhis and guaramalas to Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, marking the culmination of the sacred ceremony.
